I am a BIGGBY COFFEE owner/operator who also spent 38 years as an elementary school teacher. When Bob and Michelle Fish first started speaking about their farm direct initiative at our annual franchise meeting, I was intrigued by the schools our partner farms were building.
In January 2024, I was able to visit Finca Terrerito in Honduras. Their school had opened about a week before our visit. I was so touched by what I saw. The students were dressed in their best clothes; they were excited to have visitors! As I walked up and down the rows of desks, they were anxious to show me their work. This school is made up of students of varying ages and abilities. I was impressed with the teacher and the curriculum, which focuses on values.

Some of the school’s goals were shared with us. They were hoping to gain accreditation, build a computer lab, and have each student plant a tree to care for as part of their curriculum. Seeing the school made me happy and proud that we are helping by selling the coffee produced at Finca T.
A year later, I was lucky enough to make a return trip to Finca T! Visiting my new friends was certainly something to look forward to, but I was anxious to see the school and the progress made since last year. And boy, there was progress!! First, the school is fully accredited! That is a major accomplishment in one year! A kitchen and dining area have been added. Mothers volunteer to cook lunch to ensure that each child has a nutritious lunch every day. A playground has also been installed on the school grounds.
The trees have been planted. Every tree has a sign near it identifying the type of tree and the owner.

Most exciting, for me anyway, was the lesson we observed. We were able to see an example of their daily English lesson. It was fun and engaging. The students were so happy while participating. I could see real improvement in the oral language skills of both the students and the teacher.

The school has become such a joyous space! It is also used as a meeting room and a place for parents to receive some schooling as well. And just think, every time you order that cup of coffee, you are helping that school and others like it on our partner farms.
